Tollway settled lawsuit over fatal crash for $2.4 million
Ten-year-old Steven Strickland Jr. Was killed along with his father, Steven Strickland Sr., 32, and his grandfather, William Strickland, 61, on their way to O’Hare Airport. William’s wife, Annette Strickland, and two state workers were also injured.
According to published reports, State Police said William Strickland lost control of his vehicle and skidded into the rear of a state maintenance truck, which had been directing traffic away from an accident.
However, a civil suit filed by the estates of William Strickland and Steven Strickland Sr. presented a different account. It claimed William Strickland swerved to avoid the maintenance truck after it suddenly pulled out from the shoulder, causing the Stricklands’ car to hit a parked truck .
“It was all supposed to be the passenger car’s fault,” said Terrence K. Hegarty, a lawyer for William Strickland’s estate. “If that was the case, there wouldn’t have been a settlement, would there?”
